Nowadays very interesting things are happening in Turkey. According to media channels, you used the read or watch you may be easily a supporter of protestors in Gezi Park or the government itself. Whatever you understood or misunderstood it is clear that the protests are not about the trees in Gezi Park or re-arrangements in Taksim square, which is one of the most important, the centers of Istanbul. There are of course internal and external dimensions. For the internal one the subject can be divided into two parts; (1) a fight between the ex and new owners of Turkey and (2) listening and understanding skills of new owners to “Others”. The differences between the ex and new owners about the meaning of “being Turk or one from Turkey”, “progress and development of the country” and “mediating and moderating effect of religion as a culture” are the main conflicting points. It is not easy to predict the near future. However when Prime Minister Erdogan is compared with Mubarak from Egypt and Zein El Abideen from Tunisia and Taksim with Tahrir by talking about a “Turkish Spring” it should be reminded that the current government won all elections in the last 11 years with growing percentages (2002 34%, 2004 42%, 2007 47%, 2009 38%, 2011 50%). Therefore, we are talking about a democratically elected government. Of course, it is not a proof about the future, but at least this is an elected government, and we’ll see the affects of the protests in 2014 elections. As to listening and understanding performance of them there may be a lot of things to be progressed, but also may not be while Erdogan seems to decide to continue as is. Additionally it may be helpful to know that the “Kurds” are not supporting the protests. Why? A good question.
As to external dimension the question should be asked at the first step is who had and have interests with the previous version of Turkey, not interrupting anyone in the region, always ready to follow the “Westernized” order and continuously waiting at the doors of EU. There are of course things to be developed, but it seems it will be in a very “Turkish” way this time.
